3) Death Valley National Park Sand Dunes

Some 14 square miles of dunes lie to the east of Stovepipe Wells Village. The highest, most dramatic of them are found right along Rte 190. There are no trails to follow: hikers are free to roam at random. The best time to see the dunes is in the morning or late afternoon, when the air is cool, the light is gentle, and the shadows are long, accentuating the dunes intricate, wind-sculpted forms.
