Returning to Rte. 190, head south.  The drive comes to Salt Lake Creek, a wash that flows from springs yearround and is the home of one of nature's anomalies: inch-long pupfish left over from the Ice Age. Through the centuries, as water in the area became scarcer and more salty, the pupfish managed to survive by gradually adapting to their changing habitat.

As y ufollow the dirt path and boardwalk that form a loop trail through the area, notice the vegetation, including pickleweed and salt grass, and look for the tracks of night visitors such as bobcats, foxes, and coyotes. Salt Creek is a choice area for birding too; be on the alert for ravens, spotted sandpipers, killdeers, common snipes, as well as birds of prey.
