As Rte. 190 continues eastward across Death Valley, a sandy plain appears to the south, dotted with odd-looking clumps tha tbear a distant resemblance to corn shucks. They are actually arrowwood plants, perched atop pedestals of soil that were formed by the scouring forces of wind and water.
